The Behavior Intervention Plan can help take the guesswork out of transporting students

Preparing staff to face the challenges of transporting students with special needs will make the process easier for not only your bus staff and the student, but everyone who is involved in a student discipline issue.

By far the most challenging situations our drivers face, are those which involve children diagnosed with emotional disorders. There often are no cues to indicate the brewing storm these children experience before it erupts on the school bus, blindsiding the driver and attendant. The Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) becomes critical for safely transporting students with this diagnosis. The level of unsafe behaviors exhibited are daunting to manage without a structures plan which addresses the specific and unique needs of the child.

The PTSI’s What You Must Know About Transportation of Students with Special Needs seminar will address the BIP and how transportation professionals can use this tool to anticipate unsafe behaviors and modify them to a safe level. The BIP is widely used in the school setting, but often is not communicated or referred to when making student behavior management decisions for the bus staff.

Kathy Furneaux, PTSI’s expert on transporting students with disabilities, will answer the following questions in the seminar:

  • What is the BIP and where do I find it?
  • If there is no BIP created for the student, how do I start the process?
  • What do I look for on the BIP to apply to transporting the child on a bus?
  • How should I communicate this information to the bus staff?

The Behavior Intervention Plan will take the guesswork out transporting students who experience some of the most unsafe behaviors faced on a school bus. Join us for this sure to be lively discussion and take away information to make your job easier!
